ITSE Standard #5: Designer

Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate
 learner variability. Educators:

5a Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.

5b Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.

5c Explore and apply instructional design principles to create innovative digital learning environments that engage and support learning.

When I think of this standard I am reminded of the SAMR model. The SAMR model is a tool that teachers can use to evaluate the purpose of using technology in a lesson plan.  A certain technology can just be used as a substitute for a traditional lesson or it can be used to truly redefine a lesson so that students can use high levels of creativity to perform tasks and make products that are truly authentic. Educators should chose tech tools that best fit the purpose of the lesson and allow for differentiation whenever possible.

Reconstructed Unit for Teaching the Nervous System

In the fall of 2016 I took the course entitled Integrating Technology into the Curriculum.  This class provided me many opportunities to freely choose and learn a variety of web based applications that might enhance my curriculum. It was through sharing and dialoguing with class peers that I chose certain applications that would help me build a new unit for my Health class.  The unit was built with the help of my mentor Stacey Bell.  It not only includes new-to-me technologies but also considers science standards, social standards, and a detailed outline of activities. The student sample I have provided was built on Pikochart which allows students to present their research findings in an infographic.

EdPuzzle

One tool that has allowed for an interactive approach with my students is EdPuzzle. EdPuzzle allows an educator to find a content appropriate video that supports curricular needs and transform that video into an interactive discussion with the teacher.  At various times during the video the teacher can cause the video to pause and ask questions of the students. The teacher can watch the students progress through the video to monitor responses and assess understanding.  The teacher can even assign a grade to EdPuzzle answers.  Educators can create free accounts and students can be invited to join online classrooms.  There are already thousands of pre-made EdPuzzles already made that can suit a variety of subject matter.
Here is an EdPuzzle I have created for Health.

VoiceThread

During my first technology class at Washburn University, I learned how to be a student that used Canvas as an online platform for learning. From Canvas, my professor Dr. David Pownell set each student up with a WordPress account that allowed us to blog about current trends in technologies.  One such blog I created was about a tool called VoiceThread.  While my instructional practice is almost always inquiry based there are always students that miss school and therefore miss content.  With VoiceThread I can upload a PowerPoint and record my voice over the PowerPoint slides in a lecture style.  VoiceThread also allows you to connect with many different people from different walks of life by clicking on a database of VoiceThreads and working through the content of the VoiceThread.
Here is a link to a VoiceThread I created for my Diversity of Life Unit.  Also, I have embedded the video below.
